Sounds too good to be true, right? That’s what I once thought.
I’ll never forget it. I was 18 years old. I was a freshman at Boston University. A classmate of mine brought me to an underground martial art school in a shady part of the city — Boston’s notorious South End. There was no sign outside. You wouldn’t even know the place existed if it wasn’t for my friend. After walking through a narrow cobblestone alleyway he took me through one unmarked door that led to a cold, empty concrete room. Then we walked through an inner door that led to a tiny basement dojo. There were swords, knives, bokkens, and other weapons adorning the narrow walls. I was intrigued. He introduced me to the instructor, Grandmaster Peter Freedman. Grandmaster Freedman sat me down in the waiting room and told me, “you have no idea what you’ll get here. He smirked. Then he whispered. “You’ll know more about self-defense in a few months training than black belts who have been studying for years. When you get promoted to yellow belt, your first belt, that will be equivalent to a 5th degree black belt in most other schools.” I just smiled back. He was nice, but I thought he was full of BS. I just wanted to learn some cool self-defense techniques for 6-12 months and then focus on my college studies. I had no idea what was in store for me. —Sensei David J. Weinberg
How could you possibly learn so much so quickly? The short answer — with some serious bio-hacking.
Most self-defense systems teach martial arts by having you memorize and regurgitate hundreds or even thousands of techniques (pre-arranged responses to pre-arranged attacks). For example, you might learn how to defend against a right hand grab on your chest, how to defend against a left hand grab on your chest, etc). You have to make sure your training partner attacks… just right… with no deviations or the defensive technique will be rendered useless. Well, that is until you pay for the next technique. Yeah, that can get expensive!
Even worse, the information is taught in such a fragmented fashion that you will never fully comprehend how everything fits together. You’ll never truly become independent of your teacher or school. That’s great for the martial art school’s business, but it’s terrible for you. You and your family’s lives may be at stake and they are counting on you to protect them.
Other schools may say that they teach through principles (the root idea that makes all the techniques work), but if you’re smart enough to ask them to show you the principles they often will tell you they are in the techniques. This is true. However, if you’re not guided step by step how to see the principles they will remain hidden from you either indefinitely or will take decades to discover on your own. Who has time for that?
The Choice Is Yours:
The Old Way
(Technique Based Learning = Memorization & Limitation)
Principles & Concepts
(THE ROOT THAT MAKES ALL TECHNIQUES WORK)
(MEMORIZED, DEFENSIVE RESPONSES TO MEMORIZED CHOREOGRAPHED ATTACKS)
The Combat Science Way
(Principles & Concepts Based Learning = Creativity & Infinite Options)
(Physical movements that showcase principles through action such as particular ways of striking, particular ways of throwing, particular ways joint locking, etc.)
Principles & Concepts
(They comprise the inner teachings that are the root of all techniques and the gateway to creating infinite variations.
It was the principles that were kept secret in most schools in Asia. If the master teacher possessed exceptional knowledge he would only reveal the ability to see and understand these principles with his favorite, most dedicated student. The majority of the students had no idea that there even existed a way to bio-hack their minds to unlock incredible skills and abilities in such a short amount of time.)
What if instead you learn the martial science principles that make up the thousands upon thousands of techniques. From your very first day we’ll teach how to begin spotting these hidden principles so you can begin inventing your own techniques and thousand of variations on your own after just a few online classes.
Combat Science will help guide you as you nurture an exceptionally strong foundation in self-defense. In fact, it will be so solid that if someone ever attacks you with an unfamiliar technique or weapon you will be able to instantly invent a counter attack that is specifically designed for the threat at hand.
Once you learn these inner teachings you’ll never want to go back and learn via techniques again (as is commonly taught at 99% of schools). I can promise you that.
I remember my 3 month mark at Grandmaster Freedmans’s undergound dojo. A Jiu-jitsu master came to visit our school from oversees. I had heard a lot about him. I couldn’t wait to meet him. He was from Ireland. Toward the beginning of class I paired up with him and worked on the class self defense exercise for the day. After a few minutes of training together something just wasn’t right. Trying to be polite yet figure out what the heck was going on I asked, “so how long have you been practicing Jujutsu?” “23 years!” He asserted in an Irish accent. “So what belt are you?” I asked. “I’m a 3rd degree black belt.” He proudly stated. “But if I was in your school I wouldn’t even have my white belt! This school is very advanced.” Grandmaster Freedman then yelled out for everyone to switch partners.
To say I was perplexed was an understatement. Physically, I was as good as the visitor if not better. Intellectually, I knew way more about Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense than him! How was that even possible? I never studied martial arts before in my life. I had only been studying with Sensei Freedman for 3 months. I wasn’t a prodigy either. I was just a regular student in the class. I thought everyone learned self-defense like our dojo.
I didn’t find this out till weeks later, but after we changed partners the visitor went over to Grandmaster Freedman and asked, “what level black belt is that guy?” as he pointed to me. Grandmaster Freedman had to awkwardly explain, “Dave [Weinberg] doesn’t have a belt yet. He just started with me 3 months ago. He’s just a beginner.”
That was the first of many experiences with the “outside world” where I began to realize I was quite privileged to be studying with Grandmaster Freedman. I was lucky to be learning Freedman’s Method Ketsugo Jiu-jitsu*. One of my classmates even met a master sword practitioner while visiting Japan. After speaking for a few minutes about how Grandmaster Freedman taught his students through principles and concepts the Japanese swordsman explained to my friend, “you have a very special teacher. Don’t ever leave him. No one outside of Japan is supposed to know what your teacher knows!” —Sensei David J. Weinberg
Dave Weinberg is one of America’s foremost experts in Freedman’s Method Ketsugo Jiu-jutsu*
Through Combat Science he is sharing his rare knowledge that he learned by studying directly under Grandmaster Peter Freedman in his underground school. Dave even managed to persuade Grandmaster Freedman and his top instructors to teach on the site as well.
Grandmaster Freedman’s legendary method of teaching self-defense will empower you to hack into the remote corner’s of your mind and acquire insane skills at an unfathomable pace. Once you open up Pandora’s Box and learn to see self-defense via Grandmaster Freedman’s inner teachings you will never look at self-defense the same.
